NANYORI YAMAT

Nanyori Yamat is a young Maasai woman
who was sponsored by Emusoi. She is albino and 17
years old. She has finished primary school and
studied tailoring for two years in a nearby
vocational school. Her mother is a widow with four
other children. The fact that she is an albino puts
her in danger. In Tanzania, albinos are being
hunted down and killed for body parts to be used in
witch craft. Many have been murdered, mostly in
Western Tanzania. Her family is here in Northern
Tanzania but even so her neighbors told her if she
comes home to stay inside and try not to be seen
because she will be hunted as an albino. We are in
Northern Tanzania but the danger is that albinos are
being kidnapped to sell their body parts. Sometimes
they aren’t even dead when the body parts are taken.
The body parts are taken from babies, children,
adult albinos. Nanyori is, of course, afraid to go
home because her father is dead, and she has no
strong protector.
Now that she has finished her
course, she needs a livelihood. Considering her
skills, donation money became available to buy a
sewing machine, some material and sewing accessories
to set her up as a seamstress. There is a little
corner at Emusoi Center where she can work for the
time being, to do odd sewing jobs like repairs,
sewing khangas and to slowly gain experience.
Meanwhile, we can search for a position for her.
Since she has her own machine, there is a
possibility that she could join a group or a
cooperative and earn a living. This takes a little
time to set up but meanwhile she is safe.
